Red Light Therapy

Science & Benefits

Red light therapy involves exposure to low levels of red or near-infrared light, wavelengths that can penetrate the skin and stimulate cellular activity. This non-invasive treatment has garnered attention for its potential in promoting healing, reducing inflammation and enhancing wellbeing.

Red light therapy works by using low-wavelength (around 630-660nm) red light to stimulate the mitochondria in cells, increasing cellular energy production. This process, known as photo biomodulation, promotes cellular repair and regeneration, which can lead to benefits like increased collagen production for skin elasticity and thickness.

Red light wavelengths penetrate 8-10mm below the surface of human skin and are absorbed by mitochondria, the powerhouse of cells. This absorption triggers the mitochondria to produce more ATP, the energy source of the cell. With more energy, cells are better equipped to perform their functions, including repairing damage and creating new cells.

Near-infrared (around 810-940nm) light penetrates deeper into tissues providing anti-inflammatory benefits and healing effects which promote blood circulation, aid muscle recovery and relieve joint pain.

The Medibed commercial full body red light therapy bed contains 32,000 LEDs having a combined power output of 5500 watts emitting red and near-infrared light in 630nm, 660nm, 810nm, 850nm and 940nm wavelengths providing a total dose of 75 J/cm² during a 15-minute session.

Benefits of Red-Light & Near Red-Light Therapy

  • Skin Rejuvenation & Collagen Boost – Promotes collagen production and skin rejuvenation for firmer, smoother skin which contributes to a more youthful appearance and aids in the reduction of fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Improves Skin Texture – Reduces acne, scars, sun damage, and conditions like rosacea and eczema.
  • Healing & Tissue Repair – Accelerates healing by increasing blood flow and collagen to supports the body’s natural repair process.
  • Pain Relief and Joint Health – Helps ease inflammatory pain from conditions like arthritis, neck pain, and muscle soreness, and improves joint mobility.
  • Muscle Recovery –Penetrates deep into the tissue, reducing inflammation and promoting cellular repair which speeds up post-exercise recovery and reduces muscle tension.
  • Mood & Sleep – Research suggests positive effects on mood, potentially helping with SAD, and improving sleep patterns.
